This project is currently under construction and is being assisted by AI.
Feb/08/2026 - I thought AI was just a glorified search engine. Then I tried to plan my retirement in Spain using Google's NotebookLM.
When I first decided to peek behind the curtain of Artificial Intelligence, I did what everyone else does: I opened ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, and I started typing.
To be honest? I wasn’t impressed.
I treated these powerful models like I treated Google Search. I asked basic questions, and I got basic answers. It didn't feel like a revolution; it felt like a slightly faster Wikipedia. I didn't realize it at the time, but the problem wasn't the AI—it was me. I didn't know how to "prompt." I didn't know how to give context, assign roles, or iterate.
Garbage in, garbage out.
But then, I stumbled upon a tool that changed my perspective entirely: Google NotebookLM.
Unlike the open-ended chat bots where you have to craft the perfect prompt to get a good result, NotebookLM is designed for grounded learning. You feed it the information, and it becomes an expert on your specific data.
The Test Case: Spanish Citizenship & Retirement I decided to test it with a real-life, complex project I’ve been researching: retiring in Europe and claiming Spanish citizenship through my maternal descent.
Usually, this research involves open tabs, confused notes, and hours of watching YouTube videos.
Instead, I took all those raw sources—YouTube video links about Americans living in Spain, PDF documents on citizenship laws, and articles on visa requirements—and I just dumped them all into a Notebook.
The Magic Trick What happened next felt like magic.
In seconds, NotebookLM digested hours of content that would have taken me days to process manually. It didn't just summarize it; it gave me:
A Study Guide breaking down the requirements.
Flashcards to test my knowledge.
And the most impressive part: an Audio Overview. It generated a "podcast" of two AI hosts discussing my specific documents, explaining the pros and cons of the move, just like real people.
Two Lessons Learned This experience taught me two fundamental things about the potential of AI in our daily lives:
Consolidation of Complexity: We live in an age of information overload. AI can act as a filter, compressing days of research into minutes of clarity without losing the nuance.
The Learning Companion: It turns research from a solitary, boring task into a conversation. I could "chat" with my documents. I could ask, "Based on these videos, what is the biggest tax hurdle for an American expat?" and get an answer grounded only in the sources I trusted.
I went from feeling like AI was a "better Google" to understanding that it is a reasoning engine.
If you are struggling to write good prompts, try starting with a tool like NotebookLM where the context is already there. It might just be your "Aha!" moment too.
